It wasn’t to be Ipswich’s day in Coventry. Ipswich began neck and neck with Wednesfield and were joint with Newport at half time, but scored only one second place in heats 21 to 28 of the 32 heat match and slipped to third overall.
The fours format (each team rode an A four and a B four, for 2 16 heat matches with scores totalled) kept the racing tight as few riders opted to ‘sit’ a position. Wednesfield, Ipswich and Newport took 10 heat wins each to Astley’s 2, and the day eventually went to Wednesfield with 13 second places and one one last.
