Ipswich took on Poole in their opening Elite League Combination match, looking to go one better than last year’s runners up to Horspath.

With the first team having to call upon two of their squad this suddenly weakened the look of  the team , with young Jack Chaplin being called up and Jordan Stant adding his experience even thou he hadn’t even got on his bike before the day due to work.

The first heat got the home team off to a flyer from the outside grids when Poole’s Oli Sidwick was excluded when he forced Dan Knights onto the centre green while under pressure from the home rider giving Ipswich a 6-3 advantage .Heat two saw the home side increase their lead with Fellgett/Stant 6-4 over Briggs/Chant pairing making the most of the inside grids. Heat three saw Matt Hill shepherd team mate Lauren Jacobs home as they split the Poole pairing 5 -5 . Heat four was shared, then Poole got their first success in heat five Chant and Briggs 6-4 getting the better of Hill/Jacobs.

Heat six was also shared as Knights saw off Bristow and Smith. In heats seven and eight Ipswich did the damage firstly through Fellgett/Stant out-thinking Sidwick/Instone and secured a 7-3 , then not to be out done Jacobs/Knights secured the points for Ipswich with another 7-3 ,Knights allowing Jacobs to get in front while holding off the challenge of Chant /Briggs.

Heat nine saw a change giving young Chaplin his chance to shine and didn’t let anyone down with a clever back after Fellgett held up Callum Albin on the first bend, Fellgett holding off the challenge as well trying not to run into the back young Chaplin. Heats eleven and twelve went to the home team 6-3 after Smith was excluded for moving while under orders, then Hill/Stant then got the better of Albin /Bristow 7-3.

Poole did have a final say as Instone/Briggs beat the tiring Stant and Chaplin 7-3 .Thanks to referee Richard Hunt for stepping in to take charge .
