The scoring system for cycle speedway is changing. Riders will no longer score 4 points for a win, then 3, 2 and 1. The new system awards 3 points for a win, then 2, 1 and 0, copying motorcycle speedway. The change is controversial, potentially encouraging last-placed riders to risk elimination to get in the points.
The change is due to the rising cost of points, and will save an estimated 64 points per match. The savings will go toward the cash-strapped “lycra and carbon” development programme. A spokesman for Lottery Funds For Professional Sports UK said “cycle speedway? Is that the one with funny handlebars and no brakes?”
