“Last Friday I paid a visit to Ipswich’s amazingly successful cycle speedway club, the Ipswich Eagles. It was their Academy training evening, open to new comers and under 10s. I stood by the side of the floodlit track at the Whitton Sports and Community Centre and watched an England International flying around the track at breakneck speed and really enjoyed the experience of being a spectator at a very interesting sporting evening.
Boys and girls of all ages were expertly marshalled by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers and coaches and were put through their paces in a number of fun races and exercises, either as individuals or as part of a team. It was fantastic to watch so many children enjoying themselves having fun, keeping fit and making new friends.
It was also pleasing to see so many parents and volunteers giving up their time to help these children learn new sporting and social skills.
Introducing children to sport and a healthy lifestyle at an early age means they are more likely to become physically active adults. Being active also helps to improve coordination, balance and encourage better sleep, as well as reducing the risk of obesity and associated problems. There are also other benefits, such as greater confidence and improved personal skills, including cooperation and leadership.”
